Dynamic Form
Some years ago Tioga Pass opened in mid-winter for the first time in a few decades because of little snow. I drove in and headed on a what I thought would be a few mile hike, but in the first few minutes I found an expanse of ice on a river bank that engrossed me for several hours. This is one image from that time. I’ve never seen such ice formations since. From Yosemite National Park, California.

Eroding cliffs are common on the California coast, exposing what’s normally underground and invisible to us. I found these intriguing striations of earth and wandering root on a hike in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California.

The Badwater area of Death Valley is usually a shimmering white salt pan, but in the spring I was there heavy rain had turned it into a ten-mile wide lake. With salt crystals floating and evening clouds reflecting on the surface, this image provides an ethereal record of what soon disappeared altogether. From Death Valley National Park, California.

The combination of soaring redwood trees and lush ferns on the forest floor is one of the most attractive things about Big Basin State Park. I’ve hiked there many times, and this is a favorite photograph from there. From Big Basin State Park, California.

On the big island of Hawaii, I hiked atop vast lava fields. I could feel heat rising from the ground in some places, and even witnessed white hot lava oozing through the surface a couple of times. The heat there was unbearable. I admired the multitude of swirls and folds and cracks at my feet, and photographed many. This is a favorite.

I thought I’d found another galaxy when I found this scene in a cup I’d abandoned with a half-inch of tea in it. In addition to the patterns of the dried mold, I love the tea rings around the outside, recording the days until the tea fully evaporated, like tree rings recording a tree’s age. The ancient bristlecone pines in the White Mountains of California are some of the oldest living things on earth. One type of bristlecone grows straight while another swirls upward, like these. When the bark has fallen away the wood erodes, creating even more texture on the hard smooth wood. From the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, California.

In a heavy February snowstorm, huge snowflakes blew across the field between the tree and me. I didn’t know my film would capture the blowing snow but was delighted when I saw the negatives. In this frame the wind was constant, giving the elegant diagonal sweep across the image. From Yosemite National Park, California.

The slot canyons of Utah provide long passages to explore, hewn by the flow of water over thousands of years. As an engineer I appreciate the fluid dynamics that sculpt the stone; as an artist I admire the graceful curves that have resulted. From Little Wild Horse Canyon, Utah.

The sparkle of newly fallen snow always feels magical, and how it drapes over everything below it creating a fresh landscape is lovely. I love how these creases are unique to the moment, but also resemble so many other things in nature such as sand dunes, leaf patterns and river tributaries. From Mt. Shasta, California.

During my one and only hike at Castle Crags, rain poured down and all the tree branches reached out into the enveloping fog. I was soaked and lost a roll of film that got wet in my backpack, but thankfully the roll this image was on was dry. From Castle Crags State Park, California.

The ripples of water making patterns on this rock formation caught my eye, and when I framed it in the camera the stone looked like a pile of bones to me, hence the name. I love the interplay of randomness and pattern in this. From the California coast.

On a camping trip to Mt. Whitney, altitude sickness kept us from venturing to the mountaintop at >14,000 ft. Thankfully we were fine at lower elevations, and the early morning quiet at this lake was almost worth missing the summit. From the Eastern Sierra, California.
